Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, writes an intriguing novel with a flowing theme of “success is in the person, not the place” stringing throughout. Madly in love with his best friend Audrey, living with his loyal, coffee-drinking dog (the Doorman), and residing in a small suburban town, protagonist Ed Kennedy is the most ordinary person there is. After witnessing a bank robbery, the lousy, underage cabdriver, receives his first of many playing cards. Chosen to travel throughout town, Ed must hurt or help those when necessary. Unlike Audrey who tries to help him whenever possible, Ed’s other best friend Marv fixates himself on playing card games and scrounging as little money as necessitated.
