In the novel, Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario reveals the struggle for Enrique in his trip to the United States which it is worth it because the love of a mother can not be replaced. As the Author, was describing how Enrique feels leaving his family and girlfriend reveals “ Only his mother can help him. She is his salvation.” In other words, what the author is trying to emphasize that Enrique’s mom will help him be a better person. This means that the trip he is taking is to be with his mother and her love.
The author, Jeanne Wakatsuki, presents a meaningful story filled with experiences that shaped not only her life, but shaped the lives of thousands of Japanese families living in America. Hirabayashi is a Nisei, and he was born in the United States. He chose to go back to American after he studied in Japan for eight years. The reason that Hirabayashi wanted to go to Japan to study because his parents wanted their children to be exposed to Japanese language and culture. On the other hand, the Japanese culture influence to Hirabayashi’s parents and some discrimination from the Native American makes Hirabayashi only plays with the other Nisei after school. Hirabayashi had two close Japanese friends, and these two friends had been to Japan before.

In Alan Brennert’s novel, Honolulu, a young “picture bride” of the early 1900 's named Jin makes a deal to leave her native Korea for Hawaii in the hope to find a better life for herself. Jin’s dreams shatter as she is compelled to marry Mr. Noh, an abusive alcoholic that torments her throughout the story. In Bucknell University’s production of Marisol by Jose Rivera, one of the central themes is chaos and the effects of chaos. This theme of chaos is in part seen through the inconsistent timeline of the play. Chaos is also seen through the development of the main characters Marisol, June, and Lenny. Jose Rivera’s purpose in writing about chaos is to parallel the real life experiences of so many people before and even now that live the lives of his characters in Marisol. The chaos is present to give voice to the real people who lived in uncertainty, enduring the insane events of the play.
This paragraph from Kesaya Noda’s autobiographical essay “Growing Up Asian in America” represents the conflict that the author feels between her Japanese ethnicity, and her American nationality. The tension she describes in the opening pages of her essay is between what she looks like and is judged to be (a Japanese woman who faces racial stereotypes) versus what she feels like and understands (life as a United States citizen). This passage signals her connection to Japan; and highlights her American upbringing. At this point in the essay, Noda is unable to envision her identity as unified and she describes her identity as split by race.
In 1911, 146 people die in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. Months before, shirtwaist workers, mainly immigrants, marched on strike for worker’s rights, a true testament to their courage. In Mary Jane Auch’s historical fiction novel Ashes of Roses, the courage of immigrants is the heart of the story. The book follows the young protagonist Rose Nolan, an Irish immigrant coming to New York City. She meets challenges after challenge as she navigates her new life in America, while also making new friends such as Gussie Garoff.
“The Hero’s Journey” is term for a narrative style that was identified by scholar Joseph Campbell. The narrative pattern would depict a character’s heroic journey, and categorize the character’s experiences into three large sections: departure, which contained the hero’s call to adventure, fulfillment, which consisted of the hero’s initiation, trials, and transformation, and finally the return. The novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan investigates the relationship and actions of four Chinese women and their daughters. The character Lindo Jong’s youth in China exemplifies the three part heroic journey in how she leaves the familiar aspects in her life, faces trials in the home of her betrothed, ..... Departure:
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said that, “envy is ignorance; imitation is suicide.” (370). John Knowles’ A Separate Peace is set during World War I at Devon School, a boarding school for boys. The book centers on Gene Forrester, a student at Devon, who could be described as an intelligent, but jealous, conformist. A Separate Peace illustrates Gene’s envy and imitation of his friend, Finny, and how it affects himself and his relationship with Finny, and also how Gene eventually finds peace.
This complicates even further the girl’s way of life as she tries to relate to the American identity. The friendship between the two girls originated in school. The Japanese girl does not seem to stop her ways of relating to Americans. She considers Americans more friends than her Japanese contemporaries. However, Denise who is her American friend accuses her of not being loyal to their friendship (Okita 1).

In the novel, Tomorrow When The War Began, by John Marsden is about eight teenagers who confronted a situation that is out of their security and are trying to save their families. Fi, Homer, and Ellie are few of the characters that showed courageousness in the novel; finding out their unknown courage, taking risks, and not giving up to everything that happens. It is some of John Marsden’s message about courage. The characters also demonstrate it while they were in conflict with the soldiers who invaded their town and imprison their families in the Showground. Courage is what Ellie has that she never thought she had.
In the year 1990, my father and his family emigrated from Vietnam to the United States of America with the intention of seeking opportunities for a better life, as well as escaping the Vietnam War. The migration was a long, strenuous situation for him; he came to America without money and knowing how to speak English. Thus, he tried his best to learn English and find ways to earn money to have food. The reason for his success in America was his attitude towards the situation; my father’s objective was to become prosperous by studying and working hard. Furthermore, his determination to achieve the goal was very high.
Naomi’s mother returns to Japan to care for her sick mother. Japanese people are not allowed to come to Canada when the war begins. “What matter to my five-year old mind is not the reason that she is required to leave, but the stillness of waiting for her to return. After a while, the stillness is so much with me that it takes the form of a shadow which grows and surrounds me like air” (Kogawa, 78). War can split families for a lifetime.
People learn little from success, but much from failure. In a story by William Steig a little mouse named Doctor De Soto shows the meaning of success and hard work. Doctor De Soto and his wife dodge a not so sly fox. Doctor De Soto and his wife plan ahead to trick a not so sly fox as they knew that the fox would back stab them and try to eat them as a delicious snack , but as the fox thinks he's about to have a delicious snack Doctor De Soto and his wife had a surprise for the fox, they glue the sly ungrateful fox's mouth shut. In this story you would look though and find many Habits of Mind traits, they're 16 different traits in the Habits of Mind including Striving for Accuracy, Thinking Flexibly, and Thinking Interdependently which will be used and explained in the next few paragraphs.
