Laurie Halse employs the villain character, Andy Evens who causes the protagonist 's psychological anger. Andy evens is the senior in the high school who has a bad reputation as its believed hr forces girls to sleep with him. This character causes the destruction of Melinda and her transformation to isolated person after he had raped her in the summer party. Melinda refers to Andy by using the symbol of " IT". She describes him as her nightmare . Andy keeps harassing Melinda while she was hanging the poster of Martha 's canned food drive, he sneaks behind her and tells" fresh meat" in her ear. Both of them are round characters who changed from the beginning of the novel till the end. Rachel is like Melinda does not know how she will act and fit in the high school. She is trying to find her identity. Both of them seek affection and love. They loved the idea of stating the high school having boy friend .unfortunately, both of them are deceived by the same senor who affected them with flirtation and attention. When Rachel knows the truth and assures that Melinda is Andy 's victim she feels guilty of becoming disloyal to her friend. She has learnt a lesson about loyalty and friendship. She also takes part for making Melinda 's mad. Heather is the new in town. She was the only person who talks with Melinda in High school. Their friendship is not true and they do not trust each other. Both of them used other. At the first, Melinda does not consider Heather a true friend and her mind only thinking about her childhood friends. Similarly, Heather uses Melinda to help her for decorating the ball room for the prom and hanging the poster of Martha 's food drive. She appears as a cunning character who leaves Melinda because the Marathas do not like her friendship with her. As, she says Melinda is " the most depressed person she has ever met" ch.51 and also Melinda needs" professional help". In addition, in valentine 's day, heather sends a valentine 's card to Melinda written on it "luck" and returned also the friendship necklace which Melinda gave her for Christmas. Then, after heather 's word , she leaves Melinda alone without caring for her feelings. This action increases Melinda 's psychological anger. So, at the end of the novel, when heather returns back and asks Melinda for another help. Melinda refuses in a violent way and says "NO" to her.
