What would you risk to save your friends, family, and country during a time of war? Annemarie, a young heroine in the time of war and need, struggles along through World War II, hiding away from the Nazi. In Number the Stars, a Nobel Prize winning novel written by Lois Lowry, Annemarie Johansen presents herself as a small girl with the important traits of an athletic, quick thinking, and curious person. First of all, she is called upon to be brave for her friends. Annemarie’s mother has been running through the dark forests of Gilleleje, Denmark late at night. Unsuspectingly, she stumbles upon and hooks her foot on a little tree root growing out of the ground in an ark. Annemarie searches for her, but never finds her in the kitchen, the bed, and almost gives up. Luckily for her mother, Annemarie sees a mysterious, shadowy figure crawling along the lawn towards the house. She was running and thinking. She was thinking about the the story of Little Red Riding Hood. When she reached the part that she always prolonged for her little sister Kirsti, the wolf part, two German soldiers with two dogs appeared from out of the overgrown greenery. They stopped her and grabbed her little basket. They curiously looked inside and found food. They pulled out the cheese and bread to give to the dogs and threw the two over ripe and rotten apples to the ground with disgust. They asked why the little packet was hidden so well and Annemarie’s answer was that they were no more hidden than the napkins. She did not know what to do next though so she ran a couple of ideas quickly through her head in a few seconds and came up with the idea to act like her stubborn sister Kirsti.
