Character Analysis Of Atticus In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee

Parents are meant to help pave of way in life, or at least get that paving started, Atticus is a great example. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee our main characters father, Atticus, can be described as a wonderful parent. This book follows our main character Scout as she learns about life over the course of three summers and throughout the Tom Robinson trial. Overall Atticus is a fair person who has many lessons that can be learned throughout the book. Atticus doesn’t sugarcoat things for his children. An example of this is when Scout ask him if they were poor, “‘are we poor, Atticus?’... Atticus nodded ‘we are indeed’”(Lee 21). He doesn’t want to give the children any false information, this example is a perfect example of how honest he is, even with his children.

Another time when he taught his children a lesson would be when he made Jem go back and apologize to Mrs. Dubose after Jem had destroyed her flowers. When Jem returned back with the news that he would have to read to her every afternoon, Attius added the idea that he would read to her for a whole month. This totally highlighted Atticus’ lessons that he gives his children. The final reason why Atticus fits in this good parent category is his fairness. “We were far too old to settle an argument with a fist-fight so we consulted Atticus, our father said we were both right,”(Lee 11) this shows his fairness because he was saying they were both right in some aspects of their arguments. Instead of telling a child that they were completely wrong, just because some of their argument he listened to both the children, deciding some other their points were
