Big Fish and The Odyssey Character Analysis

In both stories the Odyssey by Homer and Big Fish by Daniel Wallace the main characters Odysseus and Edward Bloom are shown as Epic heroes within the worlds point of view. The traits of epic heros that are clearly defined within the stories such as bravery, courageousness and wittiness are clearly portrayed within both excerpts. They both show how other people are inferior to the main characters and yet still share common emotions and are capable of failing.

In the Odyssey the main character Odysseus is portrayed as a strong mortal human being that lacks self control. In lines 456-460 of the Odyssey he says “Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whos home’s on Ithaca!’’(456-460). This shows odysseus moral ethic values because he wanted to prove himself and he let his pride get the best of him and he shifted his mindset from the goal of “Reaching Ithaca” to becoming a normal human being; yet is able to master and control these human traits to a greater degree than a typical person. It's important for a human being to be able to master these traits so that you can be able to unlock a new part of your life and continue your journey towards that person's destiny. …show more content…

Edward introduces himself as a individual that respects people and put people's needs and wants in front of his. Edward Bloom is a epic hero because is skilled without weapons. “He was so fast it was said he could arrive in a place before setting out to get there” (78). This shows/displays strength that some humans may not possess making him a epic
