David Malter is the father of Reuven Malter, the main character of the book “The Chosen” by Chaim Potok. In this book, Mr. Malter is described as a smart, loving, and kind man, while knowing what he believes in and standing his ground. He has godly wisdom and earthly intelligence. Reuven and him often would simply sit together and talk. Mr. Malter encouraged Reuven to become friends with another Jewish boy, Danny, who lived a completely different life then Reuven. Without David Malter, Danny and Reuven most likely would not of become as close of friends as they would of without Mr. Malter’s encouragement. Danny also would be very unhappy without David, because e he helped him pursue his dreams. David Malter displays godly wisdom, kindness, and understanding as he raises his son Reuven and helps his friend, Danny, find who he was meant to be.

Reuven looks up to his father a lot, and for good reasons. He is, just to start off, very smart.
