During the great depression, the midwest underwent a long drought. Exposed dry earth swept away with the wind and caused huge dust storms that prolonged the dry weather. With the lowered selling prices and the lack of crops the farmers had some major economic trouble. In Black Blizzard and John Steinbeck 's Grapes of Wrath, the literature develops the ideas of the poor distribution of wealth within the populations and the social aspects of people of different economic class. Social differences arise in the wealthy, the employed, and the unemployed throughout this period of hardship.
Throughout the book "In Cold Blood," the characters of Dick and Perry undergo significant changes. At the beginning of the book, they are portrayed as cold-blooded killers who show little remorse for their actions. However, as the story progresses, we see a more complex side to their personalities. One of the most significant changes in the characters of Dick and Perry is their relationship with each other.
Response to Literature Anchor paper Dakota kowalczyk Tears of A Tiger Tears of a tiger by Sharon M.Draper. Uses many different ways to make the book easier to relate to understand one of these being the conflict itself. This book is about a teenager named Andy and how him and his friends deal with the death of their best friend Rob after he dies in a terrible car accident , the accident was caused by Andy and his buddies drinking and driving. After the car crash things only get worse for Andy as he tries to deal with the depression.
The author characterizes the two characters by using flashbacks although he sympathize Perry more than Dick, which can be seen through the long descriptions of Perry’s past compared to the few sentences given to Dick’s. There are several areas in the
Perry wasn’t just included in the plan, he was hand-picked by Dick. Dick believed that Perry had the killer mentality that was necessary to kill the Clutters’. Dick was very opportunistic towards Perry and wanted to use him. By using Perry, Dick proves that he is a manipulator who is also the mastermind behind the plan. The situation of Dick and Perry is comparable to the situation that had occurred twenty years prior to the Clutter family murder.
While Perry is mortified that he and Dick could commit such a gruesome crime, Dick couldn’t care less. All Dick is worried about is how odd Perry is. Because of how quick Perry’s mood could change, Dick thought he was “spooky as hell.” Now, Perry wasn’t your average run of the mill man. He still wets the bed, cries in his sleep, and “could slide into a fury ‘quicker than ten drunk Indians’”.
Capote portrays only one of these two seemingly distinct characters (Perry) in a way that the reader feels the need to relate to and even sympathize with him. One can be taken aback by such an attachment to a murderer. This is not surprising as the author uses his compassionate diction to manipulate the reader’s emotions with a use of pathos, the appeal to emotions. At one point Capote goes as far as to write that “Smith’s life had been no bed of roses,” (Capote 245) attempting to have the readers relate to Perry. On the other hand, Capote has Dick say this about himself: “Deal me out, baby, I’m a normal” (Capote 116).
Dick believed it was for his “scams” he was doing on people in Nevada. Once they are in custody the officers start to question them about the night of the murder and the two “friends” turn on each other. Dick and Perry were both executed in 1965. “At the time not a soul was sleeping Holcomb heard them- four shotgun blasts that, all told, ended six human lives” (Capote 5). I now know that the other two lives that ended the night of the Clutter murder was Dick and
My first impression of Ron was that he obviously only cared about his money and his lifestyle. He seemed like he always liked to buy new things and show them off to people. “I changed cars liked I changed Armani suits and tired of each new toy I acquired as quickly as a toddler on Christmas morning.” (pg. 67)
Intercalary Chapter Literary Analysis During the Great Depression, the nation as a whole was stripped of financial security and forced into a survivalist way of living. This changed the ways that people interacted with one another and the overall mentality of society. In the Grapes of Wrath, the Joad family is torn from their land and find themselves with nothing, a common story for migrant farmers of that time, derogatorily called “Okies” by Californians. But this is not the only group that is struggling, the entire county was in a state of panic and bruteness, no matter how “well off” they seemed to be.
Tom as a character changes over the course of the novel. Tom is the main character in the novel, Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. He is a character that influences the novel’s actions throughout the novel. Tom changes from worrying about only the family to worrying about the people in society as a result of tom interacting with many people in his situation. The character Tom starts by caring very much about only the family and himself for the family.
Having to choose between what is right for her mother or father, would have to be the hardest decision Ashleigh will have to make. Ashleigh’s father takes her out to eat at a diner because he has something to celebrate. At the diner, he asks Ashleigh if she will take her mom's emergency money and give it to him. He needs the money to pay someone back, and he will be set for life. When Ashleigh goes back to her mother’s apartment and looks at the teapot holding the money, she realizes that she has to make a huge decision.
Beginning with Rosemary, Dick seemed to have a firm grasp on the situation. He showed maturity and elegance in how he went about his affair. However, that maturity and elegance flew out the window as soon as Rosemary's train escapade with Bill Hillis surfaced, and soon after, the pursuee became the pursuer. The significance in this is that all it took for Dick
Although Perry is responsible for the murder of four innocent people, Perry’s actions do not reflect on who he is as a person because he is easily influenced, therefore; showing how easily people can be pressured into doing something they would not typically do. Dick, a violent, cold-hearted, manipulator, has molded Perry into the person he is today. As Perry is a follower, Dick has taken advantage of that by turning Perry into the cold-blooded killer he is today. Capote displays Dick’s manipulation of Perry through symbolism to make evident that while Perry did pull the trigger on four innocent people, although the fault does not entirely lay on him, as he was taken advantage of by Dick.
He is portrayed as a mastermind in the cold-blooded killing of the Clutters family, a man with little respect for the lives of others, which can be seen through Dick’s expression before the murder of the Clutters when he converses Perry, “We’re gonna go in there and splatter those walls with hair” (Capote 234). This sudden tone shift enables Capote to depict Dick as a cruel and immoral character. Dick’s lack of empathy and concern for other people beside himself allow him to commit crimes without remorse, which is in contrast to Perry’s moral contemplation after each bad actions they committed. Moreover, Dick is represented as the true criminal with evident motives in murdering the Clutters, while Perry is seen as a vulnerable victim who depends on Dick for validation and acceptance, something in which Dick happily provides in order to manipulate Perry, as Capote writes, “Dick became convinced that Perry was that rarity, ‘a natural born killer,’—absolutely sane but conscienceless, and capable of dealing with or without motive, the coldest-blooded deathblows. It was Dick's theory that such a gift could, under his supervision, be profitably exploited” (Capote 205).
