John Proctor One word to describe John Proctor is selfish. When proctor’s wife Elizabeth get arrested by Cheever the Sherriff of Salem. Elizabeth get arrested because she have a poppet that Mary Warren give to her when she was argument with John proctor. His ethos are aimed towards revealing Parris’s lack of devotion to the church by using decorum to show how he fails to be concomitant with Hale’s archetype of a trustworthy leader. In the play, “The Crucible’ by Arthur Miller, the protagonist John Proctor endures many struggles and as a consequence had many mistakes. Unluckily for John he was placed on a pedestal, he was viewed in the town as a religious figure. Although, through his closeted flaws he fell from his grace, that downfall eventually led to his execution.
There are different ways of seeing each behavior however, when it comes down to it, John Proctor is a selfish man. He had an affair with his servant whom he considers a child (Act one, Scene two) and admitted he only had the affair because he was a lustful man. Furthermore, he withheld critical information from the village which resulted in the village believing in the illusion of witchcraft and leading to the deaths of many. Last but not least, Proctor had been given an ultimatum of choosing his family or his reputation and he selfishly choose to protect his name. The best character (The crucible) John proctor was the most admirable character in the play because he sacrifices himself for his for his children, also he was a good husband and because he was much known in the town he had a lot of problems and also a lot of things to do like, takes care of his children and a ranch that he has. In act 4 the author wrote “Because I lie and sign myself to lie! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang” (page1232) Act4. In “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, one character tends to stray away from the strict Puritan ways of Salem. That character is John Proctor. Throughout the novel the reader learns the ways in which he is not a devout Puritan and his objections to Reverend Parris as a minister. This is not to say Mr.Proctor is not a good man, who wants to protect those he loves; however he is not a devout Puritan. For example, he does not know all of his ten commandments when asked, he had an affair with Abigail, and he does not go to church on Sunday and chooses to work instead.
In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller the author emphasizes the theme of how ones actions can be motivated by fear, but also by underlying worries about the loss of their good reputation effecting their lives negatively. One way Arthur Miller portrays the theme of respecting ones reputation is through the character Reverend Parris. Parris is the minister of Salem Massachusetts; therefore, his reputation is very important amongst the people. One night Parris sees the teenage girls of Salem dancing in the woods or "the devils playground" preforming what he believes to be witchcraft, led by a slave from Barbados Tituba. His daughter Betty and niece Abigail are there and he is frightened that what they have done will tarnish his reputation.
“I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (Miller 1357). This quote is said by John Proctor, a character in “The Crucible,” who is pleading to keep his name reputable when accused of witchcraft. Arthur Miller writes “The Crucible” to portray the Salem witch trials of 1692. The people of Salem have grievances in which they need a scapegoat.
Because of this, logic behind his actions become lost since he begins executing them with a desire to reform the corruptness of his crime. Elizabeth suggests to Proctor, that by telling the court that Abigail and the other girls bewitchments are of pretense, all women who were sentenced to death would be given their lives back. He knows that telling the judges is the most rational, but he pauses before making a choice as he responds “quietly, struggling with his thought” (53). His uncertainty shows his conflicting emotion because Proctor feels he cannot accuse Abigail because his guilt will not allow him to. But he coexisting feels the priority to accuse her in order to keep Elizabeth in high spirits.
The first impressive characteristic of John Proctor is his bravery. Speaking out against the “afflicted” girls in the way he did could cause serious question of him as a person. From the court’s standpoint John could be seen as directly opposing the court, which would have him jailed, or could even have him be accused of witchcraft. Also, he would have had to have known that Abigail Williams would have immediately accused him of being a witch once he spoke out against them. However, that did not stop him from delivering the truth to the court.
What the Audience learns from John Proctor throughout the Crucible is that John Proctor was a flawed character and the beginning of the play, but coming into conclusion of the play he regains himself because he chooses to act as a tragic hero by seeking justice for his wife, friends, and
John Proctor was a man of honor and had a well respected name in the town of Salem. Sadly he died tragically but as a hero. He was hanged because he was accused of doing the devil’s work. He was given the chance to save his life if he admitted on a piece of paper that he was working with the devil but he refused to tell that lie. He wanted his sons to be able to walk the streets without being shunned from the world because they deserved better.
John Proctor’s character is one based on reputation, and guilt. The guilt comes from his affair with Abigail Williams. The reputation aspect comes from when he is accused by Mary Warren of trying to turn her to the Devil. I believe that John Proctor grows tired of the accusations, as to why he speaks of his false involvement with Satan in front of the town. Specifically, Deputy Danforth uses John Proctor as an example for conviction as he is certain he will be able to turn others
John Proctor, a character from The Crucible is a Rebel/Misfit Archetype. A Rebel/Misfit is defined as a character that radically rejects the values of a society and the restrictions placed on him or her. I chose to do my research project on John because Proctor is my favorite character from The Crucible and throughout the whole book he was feeling guilty for his actions but wanted to do the right thing. Proctor can also fit into the Hero Archetype for sacrificing his life to save his wife.
