In the novel The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, there are several ironies which relate to life lessons that can be learned from the story. Johnny Cade seems weak and small physically, but really he is strongest emotionally. Little do the greasers know, Johnny is the glue holding the gang together. Ponyboy Curtis describes Johnny as “smaller than the rest” and “the puppy that’s been kicked too many times” (11). This shows that in the greasers’ eyes, Johnny is the gang’s pet. Johnny is tougher than they think, but emotionally rather than physically.
