A hero can be your best friend or your worst enemy. They will risk their lives for anyone and will complement you with your accomplishments. However, a hero is not a perfect person; they can do bad things sometimes. In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, there are many heroes. The characters Johnny, a teenage boy in a gang called the Greasers, and Darry, Ponyboy’s oldest brother, are both heroes. The character Bob, a Soc who belongs to the other gang, is both a villain and a hero.

Johnny, a teenage boy in a gang, is a hero. He is a shy boy who doesn't talk much. Unfortunately, Johnny is always ignored by his parents. He says this to Ponyoby, “I walk in that house and nobody notices. I walk out of the house and nobody says anything. I stay out all night and nobody cares.”(page )Despite the fact that his parents don’t care about him, Johnny is willing to stand up for the whole gang. When the Socs jump him and Pony, a teenage boy in the gang and the youngest among all of the members, Pony is drowned by one of the Socs, Johnny says, “I had to…” “ They were drowning you Pony, they might have killed you” (page 55). He is willing to do anything for Ponyboy and Sodapop, who is the middle child of the three. Darry is always on Ponyboy for being on time to come back home. Although Darry yells at Ponyboy for not coming back on time sometimes,“Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door”(page). When Ponyboy comes out of the hospital because elf getting injured, he see Soda and Darry waiting for him, “Then I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying” (page). Darry says that he was so scared that something bad had happened to Ponyboy that he started crying, which he never does. Darry takes care of both Ponyboy and Soda. After their parents died, Darry was responsible for both of them. This shows how Darry is a hero by caring for both of
