The Wizard of OZ follows the hero’s journey by showing the
Julia’s character develops throught the novel, “The Age of Miracles.” In chapters 1 and 2, Julia is brought onto the story as a sweet and innocent girl. She is an only child and lives with her mom and dad. She never breaks the rules, does not talk back to her parents, and is always thinking of the consequences before she does something. Throughout the novel, Julia begins to what and who she has in her life.
In the passages “The George and the Jewels” by Jane Smiley and “Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse” by Anna Sewell, the authors make both passages in first person. However, the authors also use the first person perspective to develop the characters. Both passages include a conflict of ideas between two characters, but they are also different in many ways. In “Black Beauty”, the author develops the character to make her overcome the problem, whereas in “The Georges and the Jewels” the author develops the character by making a problem that the character will have to solve later on in the story.
Throughout Janie's life, she was told what to pertaining to her body and decisions. People around her in Eatonville criticized many of her choices, especially her deciding to live with Tea Cake. This decision, caused a whirlwind of events that start with Janie realizing that she could make her own choices, and that her life didn't belong to anyone else. She journeys from being an object to a respected person, and it all begins--and ends-- in Eatonville.

As cliché as it is, “get back on the horse that bucked you” is a crucial piece of advice to remember when struggling to surmount obstacles. These obstacles are personal barricades that we set up unconsciously based upon our fears. It may be easy to identify what we are afraid of and how to overcome it, but challenging our fears proves to be more difficult. Sometimes, we don’t even address these problems because we are subconsciously trying to avoid them such as in the beginning of The Georges and the Jewels by Jane Smiley. The main character unknowingly tricks herself into thinking that just because she continues to get thrown from her horse, it will always hurt.
In every epic, many characters follow archetypes, or “patterns that are repeated throughout the ages,” and The Wizard of Oz is no exception to this rule. Dorothy, the main character, embodies “The Orphan” with her fear of being abandoned forever in this bizarre world and her task to return home. She must brave this alien world and all it’s inhabitants to ultimately gain independence and maintain her innocence. The Wizard is “The Creator,” who fears being revealed as a fraud and works to maintain his illusion of greatness. He must help Dorothy and her friends using his inventiveness and power.
The Wizard of Oz and Wicked are both very successful and well-known broadway musicals. Both of these musicals are based off of the same story, but each give a slightly different meaning to it. While they are both based on a similar tale, these two broadway musicals have many characteristics that are similar and differ from each other. Tennessee Williams gave her the outline design to have the most problems in this play, but operate as if she is the one who is in charge.
