High school, it’s a necessary part of life, yet no one wants to be in it. This is the case and more for freshman Melinda. Melinda is the protagonist in the book Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson. She is going through a very rough time that she is having trouble dealing with on her own. Before her freshman year of high school she was raped at a party, no one knew that this happened. She called the cops, and the party got busted. Everyone at school hates her because of this, not knowing the real cause of her calling the police. She is so depressed from keeping everything bottled up that at any moment it seemed she was going to crack, but she was able to pull through,. The other kids at school are absolutely cruel to her. She has no friends. The only girl that is her “friend” is friends with her because she is new and has no friends yet. She hardly talks anymore, she has nearly become mute. People will call her names because she got them in trouble at the party. This is clearly stated in the book when she writes about an incident that occurred in Spanish class: “I get hosed in Spanish. “Linda means “pretty”in Spanish. This is a great joke. Mrs. Spanish Teacher calls my name. Some stand-up comic cracks, “No, Melinda no es linda.’”(Anderson 41) This shows how horrible the kids treat her at school. She is treated like this just because of one party in which no one really knew what happened. Towards the beginning of the novel a girl antagonizes poor Melinda say to her, ‘“My brother got arrested at that party. He got fired because of the arrest. I can’t believe you did that, Asshole.”’(Anderson 28) The people of her school are so judgmental of her, when in fact they know nothing about what has gone on.
