Substance abuse is a universal problem in the United States today. Millions of Americans endure from substance abuse such as underage drinking, alcohol addiction, non-medical use of prescription drugs, abuse of over-the-counter medications, and additional drugs. Nancy Botwin from the show “Weeds” was a mother who experienced an unfortunate death of her husband. Through out the show she struggles financially until she embraces a new profession from her neighborhood pot dealer. In order to maintain her privileged lifestyle after her husbands’ death, being a drug dealer seemed to be the only option for a mother of two boys.
Nancy Botwin entered the world of marijuana dealing with her regular clients being her accountant, her lawyer and a few under aged kids from her town. She was a PTA soccer mom who was in constant fear of her family and friends finding out what she has chosen to survive financially. However, there is an effect not only on herself but her children. In between soccer games, and PTA meetings she is secretly selling drugs. Nancy tries to set boundaries with her family and her work, but it seems to be getting more difficult every time. “Weeds” is located in a town of Agrestic, California. First season episode 1, is all about Nancy Botwin taking control of everyone by pointing fingers on the wrong people to benefit her. She becomes an expert at manipulating her family and friends. Half way through the episode she breaks emotionally when it becomes challenging to balance her life with several secrets and not to mention being a single mother. It becomes more difficult to manage her money when her Accountant suggests that she uses only cash.
