In Journey’s End, Stanhope is a not a admirable character at the beginning, because Stanhope was rude to the new of officer. Although at the end, Stanhope changes to a admirable character. During act 2 and act 3, Stanhope shifts into a admirable character, when he gets critical of the colonel. Stanhope is a comradeship and a brave character, he is a proud leader in his company and a character to be admired. At the beginning where Stanhope was introduced in act 1, we did not admire him for being negative and frustrated when he sees the new officer (Raleigh), when he was transported to Stanhope’s company. He was offensive toward Trotter’s chart, he said “He’s no imagination” so Stanhope was going to ruin his chart but Osborne disagreed without that, Stanhope is just being negative to everything. At the middle, Stanhope was being cruel to Raleigh by saying “Yes I have to censor all letters.” , Stanhope wants to censor Raleigh’s better because he doesn’t want Raleigh sister to know about his drinking. Although he feels depressed and has hurtful feelings for taking away Raleigh’s letter. In addition, in the end of act 2, we did admire Stanhope for his comradeship and courageousness toward Hibbert. When Hibbert said “I’m going down to see the doctor.” , Stanhope stopped Hibbert from going and persuade him to stay for the other officers and so Hibbert changes his mind. Stanhope showed comradeship to protect his company when he said “You’re going to stay here”, Stanhope persuade Hibbert by being empathetic at first “Had it for week.” and also Stanhope has the same symptoms as Hibbert so he was proud that he did not lose any more officer. The playwright wants us to show that people should always stick together, he want us to know about comradeship. We infer that Stanhope is strict about social class while Raleigh doesn’t care, Stanhope’s behaving can be admired and not admired in a certain way. When we look at the view on Stanhope, social class is important and all officers should be together working, eating, and hanging out, so in his point of view he is a admired. On the other hand, when we look at the view on Raleigh, social class is not important to him. Raleigh realised that social class doesn’t matter after the raid, everyone should be same, so Stanhope is not admire in Raleigh’s point of view.
