Louisa May Alcott’s gothic horror story “A whisper in the dark” is a short story that is brought together by certain scenes that relate to the whole story and bring it to complete disclosure. Guy, Sybil’s cousin and husband-to-be walks in on a scene where he discovers his father proposing marriage and embracing his soon to be fiancé. He comes to the wrong conclusion that Sybil had said yes and leaves without looking back. This turn of events leaves Sybil in a heart broken state and she is finally able to deny her uncle of the proposal that he offered.
