In The Glory Field by Walter Dean Myers, both Lizzy and Elijah communicate they are “true Lewises” through their bravery towards enemies and in events. In The Glory Field by Walter Dean Myers, Elijah Lewis communicates being a “true Lewis” by showing bravery towards enemies and towards weather when he goes to save Foster And David, when Foster took little David on a fishing trip he broke his leg and clutched to David not letting him go. When the Sheriff came to warn Elijah about the men wanting to whip him Elijah jumped right up and stood up to defend himself. Elijah states about some men, “Ain't nobody giving me no whipping. He better bring about ten guns if he's gonna whoop me” (Myers 110). Elijah expresses bravery by standing with his enemies. Elijah knows that the men coming will do whatever it takes to whip him. When she and Lem are getting chased by the dogs she risked not knowing what is out there just with little hope that the people there would help her. In The Glory Field, Lizzy Lewis clearly demonstrates that she will do whatever it takes for her family. Lem has been tied to a tree under suspicion he knows the whereabouts of Joshua. He is tortured and whipped and left tied to the tree. Lizzy puts herself in danger to deliver Lem water, knowing that if she's caught the punishment is severe. Myers states “Lizzy didn't want to be whipped. There is not anything in the world she didn't want more than being whipped. But she had to say good-bye to Lem'' (Myers 110). The author demonstrates that even though the last thing Lizzy wants is to be whipped. She puts herself at that risk to say goodbye to Lem knowing that she will get severely punished. She will do anything for her family, specifically sneak out in the middle of the night to say goodbye even if she's caught. The punishment is something she dreads. Lizzy shows bravery by making courageous decisions under pressure. Lizzy tells Lem to go towards the light not knowing what's coming. Lizzy and Lem are getting chased before she makes this decision so she has to act fast. Lizzy and Lem are by themselves because Joshua goes to look for Neela, so she has to make it on her own without
