Simon's family has always imagined him as being a straight boy. For example, Simon has even had two girlfriends and has always been “his father’s son”. His father also always tends to make “gay jokes,” making Simon more timid to come out to his parents. As Simon proceeds to email Blue, which he has no idea who this person is, he starts to recognize he has an interest in guys. Simon was very frightened to come out to his peers and everybody at school because he didn't want to assume his personality and interests were different because of his sexuality. This internal conflict causes Simon not to come to terms with who he actually is and stay closeted. He still did not have a clue on how to come out, but little did he know, he wouldn't have to worry about that because Martin had all of that already planned
