Nearly all individuals are born with a strong sense of empathy; in fact, many can hardly tolerate the thought of killing or abusing others, even when dealing with enemies. Therefore, if an individual is going through adversity, another’s empathy will drive them into helping others to become resilient. In the non-fiction novel, Into Thin Air, author Jon Krakauer utilizes character motivation to develop the ideas of which an individual’s resilience is shaped by the compassion of others. Krakauer exemplifies the Adventure Consultants head guide, Rob Hall’s empathy towards Doug Hansen a couple times throughout the book. Just imagine if you lost someone who was extremely immediate or someone you barely even knew. Afterall, they’re two completely different situations, but both Wes’s encountered one or the other. Many children experience this complication and don’t always turn out to be at their highest quality. Moreover, leaving them with a boundless affect, having they just lost someone remarkable to them. Although this may be true, could it affect them if they weren’t there at all.
We have come a long way from the dark times when we, americans, exercised slavery throughout the country. From when african americans fought for their freedom. From when they pursued through the rigorous implications caused by white men. From when public areas were segregated between white and black races. Today we have grown exponentially to become a country that is so diverse we can be proud of it, yet, though on paper we are all equal, are we in the eyes of society?
Where we’re from, who we know, and how our mental makeup is, is very important in our lives. It can be the deciding factor between life in prison and a life dedicated to giving back to others. In The Other Wes Moore, The lives of two young men are examined through three distinct lenses, how the role our environment, social capital (How we get ahead by helping each other) and how our mindset can dictate who we become later on in life. Both of these young men grew up in roughly the same environment, the ghettos of Baltimore, Maryland and the Bronx, New York, respectively.
In life, there are many possible roads that a person can take. Some may be smooth and lined with gold bricks and success, and some may be bumpy and paved with dirt and frustration. The things that a person does in their lifetime that leads to the end of the road comes along with many accomplishments and even more failure along the way. There are some things that can prevent these defeating things from happening such as a good supportive family and having role models in life. As exemplified by the memoir The Other Wes Moore, the author suggests that regardless of environment, lives can end up entirely divergent due to family support, choices and consequences.
Chains, a novel made by Laurie Halse Anderson, talked about the life of slaves, Loyalists, and patriots. All three of them have different ways of looking at freedom and liberty. Loyalists believe they need the king to survive, while the patriots think that they don’t need a king and can make a country by themselves. In the novel it shows how all three of them disagree with one another, one side believe something different from the other two. Patriots, Loyalists, and slaves, they all have different definition of what freedom and liberty is.
Furthermore her friend shaped Melinda who she is. Heather “We never really, really friends were we? I mean it’s not like I ever slept at your house or anything. ”(Anderson 1050
At the end of the story she finally found her voice and was able to stand up for herself. In the beginning, Melinda didn't talk to anyone, barely even to her parents. She says, “I have tried so hard to forget every second of that stupid party and here I am in the middle of a hostile crowd that hates me for what I had to do. I can't tell them what really happened” (Anderson, 28).
Though people try to hide it, it will show one way or another. Trying to cope with a traumatizing and scarring experience seems nearly impossible because people are afraid of judgement and of others not understanding. They are afraid of losing people because they have a different perspective and see depression in a different way. People’s actions and words make a big impact on others. In Laurie Halse Anderson’s book Speak, the main character struggles to cope with something that no teenager should have to cope with.
It would be very hard to express emotion in The List by Patricia Forde. Letta has several moments in the book where she cannot express her emotion because she literally does not have the words in her language to do so. "... she said, trying to apologize through the tone of her voice. There was no word for sorry on the List.

As a teen age boy who wants to find the secrets his girlfriend who left behind all these mysteries after her odd disappearance. It also tells about the lost gothic girl, Anna Cayne, who meets the young high-school aged narrator. Throughout the postcards, a shortwave radio, various CDs, and many other irregular interest.
In the book “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, it’s about a little girl who is pressured by her mother to become something she doesn’t want to be. Jing- mei , the daughter, is forced to become a prodigy(child actress), by her mother, and she doesn’t want to be one. In the story, Jing- meis’ mother uses allusions such as Shirley Temple to push her into becoming a prodigy. Although at first Jing- mei is excited to become a prodigy, she later realizes its something she just doesn’t enjoy doing. Consequently, the uses of allusion in the story help Jing- mei discover to not be a prodigy and that what her mother wants for her is not always important.
In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” demonstrates the personal growth of the dynamic protagonist Louise Mallard, after hearing news of her husband’s death. The third-person narrator telling the story uses deep insight into Mrs. Mallard’s thoughts and emotions as she sorts through her feelings after her sister informs her of her husband’s death. During a Character analysis of Louise Mallard, a reader will understand that the delicate Mrs. Mallard transforms her grief into excitement over her newly discovered freedom that leads to her death. As Mrs. Mallard sorts through her grief she realizes the importance of this freedom and the strength that she will be able to do it alone.
