In the novel The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt the main character, Holling Hoodhood is born 1954 while at the same time as Mickey Mantle the baseball legend was starting his whole career. Mickey Mantle was born in 1931 and at a young age he started playing baseball. Like Mickey Mantle, Holling had a lot to look forward to and a great life ahead. Mickey was taught new things at an early age like switch hitting and Holling was already discovering how good of an architect he would make.
In the story, “House of the Scorpions”, by Nancy Farmer, The main character is Matt, although he gets pushed around a lot by people. The main setting is Opium and Aztlan. In the beginning of the story, Matt is made as a clone in a Lab. The main problem/Conflict we find in the story is that people don’t find Matt to be a person. They think he is a beast because he is a clone of El Patron, also known as the druglord.
Cold Mountain is a Civil War story, a splendid love episode, and the story of two adventures. The primary adventure is one of Inman, a wounded, disillusional, Confederate soldier who is struggling to fight for his life in the hospital. He embarks in a lonesome yet troubling walk across the southern Appalachian Mountains. His anticipation of meeting his beloved Ada helps him carry on with the challenges that may come his way. He meets all kinds of people along this voyage including rogues and outlaws; he also manages to survive the Confederate Home Guard more than once.
Lieutenant John Dunbar from the book “Dances With Wolves” by Michael Blake is an American soldier who is eventually became a comanche who can be described as courageous and smart through the obstacles he has faced that gave him a purpose too his life. At first, Lieutenant Dunbar has two wives and a family at home that he left to fight in the civil war and be patriotic. However, over time Lieutenant Dunbar becomes Dances With Wolves and has outstanding qualities of curiousness, and is very witty the same and finds his true friends. First, Lieutenant Dunbar is characterized as intelligent and observant of his surroundings unlike most people. For instance, when he was staying at the abandoned Fort Sedgewick he first saw a wolf across from a

The book centers on Gene Forrester, a student at Devon, who could be described as an intelligent, but jealous, conformist. A Separate Peace illustrates Gene’s envy and imitation of his friend, Finny, and how it affects himself and his relationship with Finny, and also how Gene eventually finds peace.
In the year 1914, a war started that would turn innocent people against each other, and have aftermaths that include thousands of people dead due to new equipment like tanks, gas attacks, and hand-to-hand combat. In this war there was a soldier named Paul Bäumer who is a German nineteen year old who has made friends that will last a lifetime during this experience, but has also felt immense pain. His daily routine is to sleep, eat, and fight in the trenches, and he experiences death every day. Most soldiers view death as a recurring event, but Paul views it as wretchedness, which makes him different from others by caring about his comrades more than others. Paul shows many qualities through this experience of being a soldier in the First World War, and he learns what is necessary in life, which takes some people years to figure out.
The search for the soul by Inman and Ada are very different, but they both have to work hard, and do, to get what they want and need. Inman eventually makes it back to Cold Mountain and is reunited with Ada, but never gets all the way home. He does, however, find what he wanted when he left the war. His reunion with Ada gives him solace, and “[the cabin they stayed in on their first night] was a place that held within its walls no pain nor even a vague memory collection of pain.” Inman is finally home.
Gene is mean Gene heard the news, Finny is dead. Gene never would have wanted this to happen. Although Gene has lied to Finny multiple times and pushed him out of a tree, Gene feels as if part of him has died. His best friend is dead from a medical accident, of all things. As perfect as Finny is, he is not invincible.
The novel A Visit from the Goon Squad, by Jennifer Egan, brushes upon various problems that each character endures during their lifetime. Although these issues vary from each chapter, a few issues tend to correlate with one another. In the novel A Visit from the Goon Squad, the chapter “Good-bye, My Love” conveys the idea that desires are conflicting and often obscure your psyche. Whereas “The Gold Cure” transmits the idea that a consistent life is most desirable because change is feared.
In the The Things They Carried, the emotions are more than just a mental problem, they become life changing conflicts. The author of this book is Tim O’Brien. Tim O’Brien is the main character throughout the whole book. In the beginning of the book, The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien goes in depth describing what each of the men carried with them. He started with actual things having to deal with war, then talking about the emotional burdens the men carried.
The war novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque depicts one protagonist, Paul, as he undergoes a psychological transformation. Paul plays a role as a soldier fighting in World War I. His experiences during the war are not episodes the average person would simply experience. Alternatively, his experiences allow him to develop into a more sophisticated individual. Remarque illustrates these metamorphic experiences to expose his theme of the loss of not only people’s lives but also innocence and tranquility that occurs in war.
Cold Mountain, written by Charles Frazier, is not necessarily a feminist novel, but a reiteration of the age old call for balance between masculinity and femininity. Legendary heroes such as Achilles, Odysseus , Jason and Hercules must all find balance in their quests lest they fail. Inman, the protagonist, is no different in this civil war era Odyssey. American society’s perceived gender roles radically shifted after the Civil War. Ada, Ruby, and Inman all defy the traditional notions of the devoted housewife and the gruff farmer.
As people mature,they often experience stages of development which may not reflect reality. Teenagers often view the world through their preconceived ideas or through what they want events or others to be, and inaccurate represents may control thoughts and actions. The protagonists Pip in Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations and Henry in Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage struggle to separate what is from what they desire to have occur. Although both young men come from near poverty, imagine their illustrious futures, and must face shocking disappointments, they differ in how they manage their growth processes. Pip’s parents died when he was young and he ended up living with his sister and her husband Joe, a blacksmith.
After experiencing the violence of war, it is difficult for a soldier to readjust back into society causing alienation and a strain to return home both physically and emotionally. In Hemingway’s short story, “Soldier’s Home” the main character Harold Krebs lies, is incapable of love and he struggles to readapt to his family and community. Eventually, he will accept the idea that he can never really go home. Oklahoma is Krebs’ home, a place untouched by the effects of war.
