Jamie Ford's Hotel on the Corner of Bitter Sweet is a historical fiction novel that takes place during the Japanese Internment of 1942. It centers n Henry Lee, a Chinese boy living with traditional Chinese parents and trying to grow up as a typical American kid in the U.S. during World War II. When he befriends a Japanese girl in the midst of the conflict, Henry soon discovers that navigating between the borders of cultures comes with many obstacles. The novel is a painful yet beautiful commentary of the racial separation in those times, capturing the struggles of both Japanese and Chinese Americans, along with a small look into African American’s lives as well. It tells the story of the horrible camps through the eyes of a young Chinese boy, which is an interesting perspective.
Randall McMurphy, the protagonist of Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest has an unlikely destination at a mental hospital in Oregon. There, he fights against the system that has been imposed on his recently made friends in the hospital, such as Billy Bibbit and Chief Bromden, who he helps overcome the unfair system imposed on them. With his imminent battle for power against the institution, McMurphy is an archetypal Christ-like hero, although some of his actions aren’t Christ-like. The duel between him and Nurse Ratched ends in the ultimate de-throning of Ratched and McMurphy achieving what he wants to do-- even if he wasn’t there to witness it.
The novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, written by Jamie Ford, displays how a boy lived when he was younger in 1942 and when he was older in 1986. The character goes back and forth from past to present showing the struggles he overcame when he was a boy to the present time. The hardships this character went through in his younger years often led him to reflect on the past and try not to make similar mistakes that he or others around him made. Within Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, the author presents Henry with hardships with his dad, his son, and his friend showing how these challenges shaped him to be the person he grew up to be.
The king and his knights wake up early one morning to go on a hunt for a boar. While they are gone, the lady of the castle goes to Sir Gawain’s room. On her way out, “she kissed him,” (12) and then was on her way. Because the lady of the castle is married to the king, the love shared between her and Sir Gawain must stay a secret. Although they just met, he is very polite to the lady and wins a kiss from her in the end.
She is called the temptress for her acts on Gawain to betray the host he is living with for the meantime during his quest. The temptress has lead him through three trials for three days. This seems to be some type of way to get through Gawain's religious beliefs to see whether or not he is devoted to himself and God. With each attempt to being seduced, Gawain is one step closer to the Green Knight. These three trials aid him to never be tempted by things that can have bad consequences.
When reading literature, the only way readers can fully understand the characters is if there’s a conflict. What people do in the presence of a conflict can greatly differ from their normal state of mind. This applies to the characters in “Ta-Na-E-Ka”, and “Priscilla and the Wimps”. Mary is eleven and is going to experience her Ta-Na-E-Ka. Priscilla stands up for all the people who are threatened by Monk.
Television shows play an important part in our everyday lives. These shows all have a distinct social world that either reproduces or challenges dominant social values and norms. I will be discussing how the characters in Full House, challenge certain values and norms. This television show consists of three men that are all in charge of raising three girls after their mother was killed in a accident. One of the men, Danny Tanner, is the three girls’ biological father.
Because inside of him, there was a big conflict going on. Gawain withstood the temptation of the very attractive woman. What this woman tried to do was to seduce him. He was tempted for three days(secs 48-52, 58-61, 69-75). But fortunately, he did not
Chaucer characterizes The Wife of Bath as controlling and powerful. The Wife of Bath was a complete contradiction of the typical female, during this time. The average woman was submissive and reserved. Whereas, The Wife of Bath possessed character traits that one would associate with men. Chaucer emphasizes this trait by describing her in such ways one would describe a man.
Gawain does maintain chastity despite being courted by the lady. The pearl poet explains: “But his defence was so fair that no fault could be seen,/ nor any evil upon either side, nor aught but joy/ they wist” (61.19-21). Gawain purely deflected any advances she made at him. When the fair lady tries to woo him a second time she speaks of how if she could she would take Gawain as her husband.
“But no wonder if a fool should fall for a female and be wiped of his wits by womanly guile- it’s the way of the world.” (Armitage: 181,2414-2416) Gawain blames all of his troubles the past year on women. Not people who might’ve gotten in his way, or the lord of the manor, but specifically woman.
In the Wife of Bath’s, she broke all the stereotypes Medieval society thought a wife is. She tells the people that being married intercourse is part of marriage and God has made privates parts to make generations, not to waste in doing nothing. Being categorized or stereotyped in Medieval society was hard for married women in the Medieval era because often they were portrayed as disloyal, uncontrolled sexual beasts because of the lack of marriage
“Come on, come on! You are pictures out of door, bells in your parlors, wildcats in your kitchens, saints in your injuries, devils being fended, players in your huswifery, and huswives in your beds.” (l.122-125. 2.1) Iago states that women only have two jobs- take care of the home, and give pleasure to their husbands in their beds. The Wife of Bath in Chaucer's, “The Canterbury Tales”, is a successful cloth maker, “At making cloth she had so great a bent she bettered those of Ypres and even of Gent.”
The last seduction scene, Lady Bertilak plays on his courage with the temptation of a chance of survival with a green girdle which is said to be able to protect him. Sir Gawain is only seen to compromise on his honour as he did not give the green girdle to Sir Bertilak as promised that they will exchange what they get for the day. Sir Gawain’s ideals that he has to hold up to as a knight has broken down as he realised that they contradicted with one another. Sir Gawain’s action of accepting the girdle suggest his desire to live. The notion of survival is an instinctive thought to
