Dallas The book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is about two gangs who did not like each other in the hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the middle of the 1960s. The theme of the book is growing up and learning about life. One character who stands out in the story is Dallas because he comes from the poor side of town. He is a static character. The character Dally is troubled, tough, and caring. This character can be described as troubled for many reasons. One example of how he is troubled is when Dally says, “You’d better wise up Ponyboy you get tough like me and you don’t get hurt” (Hinton 147).
