Mattie is portrayed as a women who everyone envisions a women being, sweet, caring, helpful, and very nice. Zeena is portrayed as someone who’s always depressed and mad about everything, she’s crazy, sickly, jealous, and controlling.
Ethan flirted with Mattie and would try his hardest to impress her, for example, he began shaving his face everyday which he never used to do for Zeena. These inappropriate actions caused chaos within the household. Ethan began to lust over Mattie, wanting to spend as much
Ethan Sanford is an 15 year old boy. Through out his whole school life people thought of him as frolicsome... Others thought he was outgoing, but honestly they have no idea. Behind the smiles and jokes is a crestfallen boy. That 's until he meets Jessica Overton.
I think that all three of them could of used a little bit of help and done something differently. The piece of advice I would give to Ethan is to choose wisely from the start. The only reason he married Zeena leads back to when his mother was sick, he felt that things would turn out better and now in the long run
As a result, his relationships with Mattie and Zeena worsen with him being the one getting the full brunt of the negative effects all because of his decision to try and end both his and Mattie’s lives. The plight of Ethan evokes pity in the audience because even with his strength, intelligence, and affinity towards nature, he remains thoroughly unsatisfied in both of his relationships because of him showing genuine care for everyone. Ethan is a tragic hero because Wharton exhibits his fatal flaw of selflessness as the cause for fixating him in tragic circumstances, and making them go downhill, all the while generating sympathy for him. Through his desire to keep everyone away from unnecessary pain, Ethan evolves as a tragic hero by involving himself in situations that make it hard for him to escape such as his relationships. First of all, he chooses to take care of his parents himself which prevents him from pursuing an education and keeps him socially isolated.
Ethan loses everything he sought. He lost his Mattie but also managed to not lose her at the same time. Literally he lost Mattie as her original personality was lost by the accident. In another sense he managed to keep her from leaving their household which was the whole ignition to Ethan’s plan. In the end, Ethan sacrifices everything to abandon his old life of a boring, sickly Zeena to end up being with a boring, sickly Mattie Silver.
After they were married Zeena got sick and they need to call upon Mattie to do the housework. As time went on Mattie and Ethan formed a relationship through the same context as he previously did with Zeena. In the end Mattie was unable to do housework which completely shows that Mattie
She whines a lot and really makes it hard on Ethan to move on and do things with Mattie. But when she starts to figure out about the Ethan and Mattie situation she tries to get rid of her. She also locks them out, which is weirs because Zeena never locks the door and when she does she usually leave the key outside. But when Ethan realizes the key isn’t there he starts to panic, and Zeena comes to open the door that is her saying that she knows about Ethan and Mattie. “It’s not there.
After his parents died he was very depressed. he did not want to feel lonely so he married so he married Zeena. Ethan really did not want Mattie there at first.
Throughout the novel “Ethan Frome”, many of the characters made irrational decisions. Quite a few of which impacted their daily life, for example Ethan’s decision to marry Zeena. Once Mattie moved into their home to carry out the housework Zeena was unable to complete due to her debilitating illness, Ethan developed feelings for her which only led to more chaos in their household. Their love blossomed into a greater intimacy than Ethan and Zeena’s marriage ever was. Not thinking logically, they pursued each other in the same house as Ethan’s wife.
Mattie gains authority through Ethan's sympathy, giving her confidence. Ethan disregards Zeena when he is with Mattie, giving Mattie confidence boosts. Ethan makes sure he can spend the most time with Mattie possible, especially
Ethan’s bad choices of leaving school, feeling lonely and marrying Zeena and then also being avoidant when he wants to leave her. Obviously, Ethan Frome’s tragedy is all caused by his personal decisions. One of many ignorant choices Ethan makes is when his mother gets ill, somewhere in the beginning of the story. During this time, Ethan dropped out of college.
Forcing Mattie to leave is Zeena’s desperate attempt at solving the love triangle. Zeena hoped that Mattie leaving would guide Ethan and Zeena back to their original relationship without distractions. However, Zeena could not have anticipated that the lovers’ prospective separation is needed for them to confess their feelings for each other and the culmination of the painful saga. The story comes to a climax when Mattie says “we’d never have to leave each other any more” referring to their suicide and unity in death (Wharton 63). Ethan agrees to her solution and the problem of their living apart is solved.
Zeena’s sickness was still a dilemma existed between Ethan’s desire of living with his true love, Mattie and what he believes is morally right – caring for the sick Zeena, even though in the first place Ethan married Zeena not out of love, but in an attempt to flee himself from isolation, loneliness and heavy duties at the house. Finally, Ethan and Mattie choose to preserve their love and happiness through the only way they think of –in heaven. However, like a quote says, “That's life — whichever way you turn, fate
Both Zeena and Ethan have varying responses, however both showing some commitment to repair their union. In Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton utilizes a broken pickle dish, to represent the views of espousement, and the representation of their varied human actions.
