Men who are well spoken are trusted greater, looked upon more favorably, and in most cases are more successful than their poorly spoken counterparts. Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein stated, “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world”. Silas Lapham, a character more inclined to embarrass himself with his lack of linguistic savvy than to impress his successful peers, is an example of a man with poor linguistic capital.
When people think of someone in their family who provides for them many think of their mom or dad. Although, that is not always the case. Darry is the older brother and provider to Sodapop Curtis and Ponyboy Curtis in the book The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton. The convict shares the name, is close in age, and grew up in the same town as the, now very curious, reader. Other People’s Words, written by Victoria Purcell-Gates, is a captivating story about an Appalachian family who are poorly educated. Jenny, the mother, is determined to give her child, Donny the best education that he can receive, even though she cannot read. She fights for justice in Donny’s school because he is not learning and the teachers still push him to the next grade level. Purcell-Gates meets a committed Jenny, who offers tutoring to both her and Donny. This tutoring continues for over two years in which both learn basic skills.
“More weight,” stated by Giles Corey from, “The Crucible,” before he was pressed to death for witchcraft. Giles Corey was one of the oldest people to be killed during the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Trials was a series of events that took place in 1692, where innocent people were hung for apparently being witches. The people in the trials were tried in court and the girls who accused them would act like the person or people were sending spirits towards them to make the judges believe them. Giles Corey reminds me of myself by his sarcasm during conversations, always acting ornery, and the comical remarks he makes.
The Weight of the World The nature vs. nurture debate is a common and long standing debate in fields such as biology, sociology, psychology, history, literacy, government, and many more, but it is accepted that they both play a huge part in the world. Nature produces a template of what an organism can become. The organism is held between the ends of a spectrum of what can be, yet it will never have the knowledge of its full potential. Due to this, the organism in question must dedicate itself to an environment in which it can fully express its absolute abilities.
To accustom to their surroundings and different situations, most complex characters change. Characters change in different ways depending on their situation, but changes in personality can modify the whole plot of a book. Main characters, especially in this book, develop continually through different situations and experiences. Through those new relationships, experiences, and hardships, characters create new goals and aspirations. Everyone, including fictional characters, need to change in ways depending on the different scenarios of daily life.
The upbringing of a child contains many factors, many of which correlate to where a child grows up. The people, culture, and experiences of someone’s childhood are the greatest determining factor for what kind of person they will become. So how does the nature and nurture of one’s upbringing impact the decisions that they make, and their life in general? Author Wes Moore explores this question in his memoir, The Other Wes Moore, as it relates to two lives in particular. Moore main purpose in this book is to explore the overarching impact that a collection of expectations and decisions, not always one’s own, can have on someone’s life.

In the novel The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, when Byron meets Grandma Sands it seems that all of his sass is gone. Instead he smiles and speaks politely to Grandma Sands. This seems out of character for Byron. However, Byron is afraid of Grandma Sands. He hasn’t seen her since he was five years old and she had make an impression on him.
The Crenshaw reading and the Black Feminist Statement talk about how women have suffered through the years fighting against violence, racial, sexual and class oppression. Women over the years have felt the politicization of millions of people and this is more powerful than a few voices. The way people think about women violence have changed. For example, rape once was seen as a very private and personal situation, but now this is seen as an issue that affect women as a class. The process of recognizing groups such as gay, lesbians and people of color have characterized the identity politics of these groups.
Literature 1 Michael Arroyo August 28, 2015 4th Period “As Simple As Snow” by Gregory Galloway “As Simple as Snow” is a mystery novel made in 2005 that may confuse people’s minds with all the art, magic, codes, and love while reading. As a teen age boy who wants to find the secrets his girlfriend who left behind all these mysteries after her odd disappearance. It also tells about the lost gothic girl, Anna Cayne, who meets the young high-school aged narrator. Throughout the postcards, a shortwave radio, various CDs, and many other irregular interest.
From this quote, we can see that Michael regrets on what he has done to Hanna at the pool. From his reflections, we can infer that if Michael did went to Hanna when she stood and stared, Hanna wouldn’t have left. Although he is trying to persuade himself by asking himself questions that can clarify that the woman standing beside the pool is Hanna, he seems like he is trying to talk himself into believing he cannot recognize Hanna’s face, but in his mind, he knows it is Hanna. Throughout the book, we can see that Michael thinks about what he has done and reflects on it, explaining his thoughts and emotions in detail.
Character traits help shape a person into what they are, there are ways to change them and become a better person. In the short story Charles, written by Shirley Jackson, a boy named Charles possessed many different negative character traits in which some include being, obnoxious, dangerous, and disrespectful. Charles displayed immature and unnecessary trouble for all the students and teachers. Being obnoxious means extremely unpleasant and Charles was just that in this short story. Charles possesses the trait obnoxious because all the children in the class were trying to listen to the story while the teacher would be unable to read due to the noise.
