Somehow she managed to write and publish a book that would keep people waiting for a sequel for over half a century. She was never a “normal” child but her father encouraged her to be herself. The book takes place in Maycomb, Alabama (based on Lee’s hometown, Monroeville) during the great depression. The main character is Jean Louise Finch or “Scout” as everybody calls her. Scouts father is Atticus Finch, who has very high morals, and her brother is Jem, Dill is their friend that Harper Lee based Truman Capote off of. All three of the children are very interested in this “scary” house in their neighborhood, where Boo Radley lives. He had been accused of taking advantage of a white woman, Mayella Ewell. That summer Aunt Alexandra shows up to teach the children about family pride and wants to teach Scout how to be more ladylike. Eventually Tom Robinson's trial rolls around, the kids sneak up to see the trial. Mayella is obviously lying about everything she says and the white jury is not happy about how Atticus basically says Mayella was lying. Tom is still convicted because he is African American, Jem is very upset about this and Atticus has to explain that some people just do not care like he does. A few weeks later Tom is shot and killed trying to escape the prison he was put in after being convicted. Bob Ewell has been threatening Atticus because of how he accused Mayella. During October the kids school was having a Halloween pageant, Scout and Jem was walking home after participating, and they hear someone following them, they think it was a boy from school who was always trying to scare them. They yelled out his name many times and he never responded, the person who was following them was stopping when they stopped, and ran when they ran
