To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-until you limb into his skin and walk around in it.” Whose shoes might I be interested in walking in? After considering my options, I chose Pamela Matthews. She is an accountant at the CPA firm of Lawing Matthews and Company, PA. I am a big math geek and she has a job that requires a lot of math skills and techniques. Therefore, I chose to follow her around for a day and see what occurs within and also outside of her office. While I was at work with Pamela she got a call on the office phone asking her to come to a client’s business office to discuss business plans and to check their financial reporting information. We rode in Pamela’s car to the client’s office, but unfortunately I had to stay in the car because what they speak about is confidential. That means it cannot be shared with others. When she goes to business clients, she does multiple things such as, gather information for their tax returns, testing for audited or reviewed financial statements, and various types of consulting work. In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird” Atticus always did more than what was expected of him. Pamela is like Atticus in many ways. She does way more than what is expected of her. Even through her standards are already high, she works to continually improve herself and the work she performs. Atticus’s quote now means way more to me than when I first read it. I thought I already knew Pamela very well, but when I started to shadow her and see how hard she works, I saw a whole different person. She wasn’t just someone I saw every day, she was someone I saw determination and excitement in, no matter what she was doing or how hard it was. I also learned that I couldn’t say I truly understand a person and what they’re going through unless I hop into their skin and walk around in it. She shared with me a famous quote by Thomas J. Watson, “If you want to achieve excellence, you can get there today. As of this second, quit doing less than excellent work.” My advice for my peers is that you should always try your best no matter what you’re doing and never judge a person because you don’t know everything going on in their
