John Lubbock once said, “Your character will be what you yourself choose to make it.” To a certain point I believe that we, as humans, choose who we want to be and how we act. But I feel as though people are often influenced by the way they grow up, by bullying, or by having a rough childhood .
Choosing our character traits is up to us, but sometimes the choice may be influenced by the way we grew up. In a movie, The Blind Side, Michael Oher is a teenage boy who grew up on horrific circumstances. He lived in a really poor area. His father was shot, his mom was a drug addict, and him and his brother were separated when they were taken away from their mother by authorities. For some kids, that's not the case, some kids get bullied for being themselves and it's so sad. Last year I had a friend and she was being bullied because she just liked to be herself and the person who bullied her didn't like that so he made her feel horrible. The things he said got to her so bad that she completely changed. Her personality changed, her style changed, I didn't recognize her anymore. Because of the bullying she was influenced, and changed her character traits so that she could stop being bullied.
Some people might say that everyone has a choice and they should choose who they want to be, but for a lot of people that just isn't the case. Most people who grow up in poor areas that provide no education, or people that are bullied at a young age are not strong enough to make the decision on their own. They don't know what they want their character traits to be because they were never taught right from wrong or they don't have enough confidence to be who they want to be.
