Introduction: Have you ever read a book and wondered how the author conveys the impact of character choices on themself, others and the world? Well in ‘Bridge to Terabithia’, Katherine Paterson uses multiple language forms and features to convey the impact of characters choices on others.These techniques include, Exclamation, Onomatopoeia, and Emotive Language. Paterson’s use of exclamation, explores the idea that Leslie’s choice to go over to Terabithia in the rain impacted on many people who knew Leslie, as well as making an impact on Leslie herself has she tragically passed away. By using onomatopoeia, Paterson expresses how the classroom reacted to Leslie’s statement about how she doesn’t own a television, as the class was very shocked. With the use of emotive language, Paterson has stated how Leslie’s death in Lark Creek had an impact on the state of Terabithia. This tells us that Jess was very good friends with Leslie and that Jess is still in shock about her death. This can also tell us that Jess doesn’t necessarily take his father seriously as he doesn’t have a great relationship with him. The statement makes the responder agitated and confused as to why Leslie didn’t think about the dangers. It also makes us confused as to why a smart girl wouldn’t think about that risk. The significance of Leslie’s choice to go over to Terabithia by herself is that she is a very brave person and was very individual. Leslie also wanted to experience Terabithia in another element as to what they are used to.
