Diagnosis and Treatment Paper Marissa Fernandez Arapahoe Community College CE Psychology 1002 Graham Baughn Character Overview Annie Edison from the television series “Community” is an exceedingly kind and complex character. Her work ethic and motivation help her to succeed academically and feel fulfilled. She, however, still feels like she lacks in her social capabilities and presents extreme anxiety surrounding that, among other aspects of her life. In addition to her anxiety, Annie tends to have emotional outbursts when in stressful situations. Annie feels strongly about needing to be liked and goes to extremes to ensure this. This directly contradicts the qualifications that the DSM-5 lists surrounding how anxiety impacts behavior. The DSM-5 states symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder to be “social situations are avoided or endured with intense fear or anxiety.” and “The fear, anxiety, or avoidance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.” (Association, 2013, p. 203). Annie does not have a case of this severe condition, which is why she cannot be diagnosed with this disorder. General Anxiety Disorder In addition to Social Anxiety Disorder, I thought that Annie would be a good candidate for General Anxiety Disorder. General Anxiety Disorder is anxiety that revolves around a myriad of different subject areas, much like Annie’s anxiety. However, again, after further reviewing the necessary qualifications for this disorder, Annie did not meet the requirements.
