Throughout the novel, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the main character, Jeannette, goes from loving her parents and her lifestyle to learning that her parents weren't actually as great as she once remembered them to be. This is seen as she gets older throughout the book and she learns her father really has let her down over and over again, along with her mother still not being present as well as a mother, changing the overall tone to the rest of the book. Her character transformation may teach readers that sometimes it's the people we loved the most in our past that can hurt us the most in our future.

Although this is how Arizona was perceived by them some truly awful things happened there that I believed helped transform Jeannette with a completely different mindset of how everyone else viewed her parents. When she's with Billy he compares his father with hers and even though what he says is pretty much true she is immediately offended and gets defensive about what he says about her father. Although she defense her father with what she believes her actually is with her and her family it stills opens a door where she begins to compare her family with others and even though she's always said how close her and her father were and how he was with her this is one turning point for her and her fathers relationship. He had always asked her if he'd ever let her down and I believe this is the first time that we see he actually does. Although he tries to “detox” and Jeannette is happy she got her birthday wish she quickly …show more content…

She attends Bernard, lives in her own apartment and makes her own money, and eventually makes her own friends and relationships. But one major character change in Jeannette at this point of the book is how she speaks about her parents and how she looks back on her life before. When she attended parties she mainly tried to avoid the mention of her parents but when she couldn't avoid it anymore she often would lie about where they were living and what they were doing. (INSERT QUOTE HERE) I believe she did this because now that she had her fresh start she wanted to make it seem like that's how she always lived even though it was all a lie. Also, now that she realizes what she could have done all along or what her parents could have done I do believe that this makes her sort of resent her parents in a way because of how she looked back on her life before.. (INSERT QUOTE HERE) But because she soon after starts to work on her novels specifically about her life and how she grew up it further shows her character as a person and how she finds this as a way to sort of cope or really just own up to herself and everyone else about who she really is inside. Not only this but that there are more to people than how they appear to be, we can never truly know someone or assume the way someone lived based on how they've found their
