The Crucible is a play about the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 in Massachusetts. People are falsely accused of doing witchcraft or believing in witches in Salem. These trials start when a group of girls get caught performing witchcraft in the woods. The leader of the group of girls was the Reverend’s niece, Abigail Williams. Abigail gets many people in trouble when she starts a series of lies after her affair with John Proctor. During the play, Abigail’s manipulative, selfish, and vengeful traits come out. One of Abigail’s main traits is her manipulative personality. For an example, Abigail threatens the other girls while they are alone and says “…let either of you breathe a word about the other things…I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you” (Miller 13). For instance, when Abigail and John proctor were alone she says “ I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart…And now you bid me tear the light out of my eyes, I will not, I cannot. You loved me John Proctor and whatever sin it is, you love me yet” (Miller 15). After Abigail and John had an affair, she wanted him to herself. She sees that John doesn 't want her anymore and thought that if she got rid of his wife, Elizabeth, he would want to be with her. Her plan was to go into the woods and drink a charm to kill Elizabeth. In fact, Abigail blames other people so she can protect herself. She says “she made me do it! She made Betty do it (miller 23). She doesn 't want people to find out the reason she was drinking chicken blood in the woods. She says that Tituba makes her drink the chicken blood every night.
