John Proctor One word to describe John Proctor is selfish. When proctor’s wife Elizabeth get arrested by Cheever the Sherriff of Salem. Elizabeth get arrested because she have a poppet that Mary Warren give to her when she was argument with John proctor. But Abigail saw that Mary Warren make a poppet in the court and Abigail take a banish to lie that Elizabeth send her spirit out to stab her with a nail.
John Proctor, a character from The Crucible is a Rebel/Misfit Archetype. A Rebel/Misfit is defined as a character that radically rejects the values of a society and the restrictions placed on him or her. I chose to do my research project on John because Proctor is my favorite character from The Crucible and throughout the whole book he was feeling guilty for his actions but wanted to do the right thing. Proctor can also fit into the Hero Archetype for sacrificing his life to save his wife.
Not every hero lives to tell his story. This is exactly what happened in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, a story focused on the Salem Witch Trials. In Spring of 1692 in the town of Salem, Massachusetts a group of teenage girls were caught by Reverend Parris, a selfish and materialistic man, dancing around a campfire in the woods during the middle of the night. In order to avoid punishment, they began to blame innocent people of witchcraft. The court was established with judges Danforth and Hathorne in charge to question the people who were accused.
John confesses to adultery in court to try to save Elizabeth when she is accused of witchcraft. By doing this, he is confessing to a serious sin. In this society, the church and government are one. This means that he could face a death sentence. He also confesses prove Abigail’s motive to kill Elizabeth and to expose her and save others from being accused by her.
Abigail said, “You loved me then and you do now!” (Miller, 23). Abigail, being the vindictive person she is, used her reciprocated feelings for Proctor and jealousy of his wife as inspiration to accuse her of witchcraft. With Elizabeth locked up for witchcraft, a sorrowful Proctor admitted to his affair publicly in hopes of freeing his beloved wife. This herolike action
Her lie then backfires; she tells the court that John never had any relations with Abigail after John had already confessed to his sin. She takes blame for the affair when she tells the court “... But in my sickness... I were a long time sick... I thought I saw my husband somewhat turning from me...”
John Proctor is seen as an exemplary human being in the eyes of the Puritans. When his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, is accused of witchcraft he rushes to the courts in an attempt to prove her innocence. However, in order to do that he needs to admit to an affair he had with the reverend’s niece, Abigail, who made up the lie that sent Elizabeth to jail. Proctor is unwilling to admit to adultery
The play The Crucible by Arthur Miller is based on true events of the Salem Witchcraft Trials but is changed in some parts to make it a better story. One exaggerated part of the play is a character named John Proctor, who has an affair with a girl named Abigale and is trying to stop the Salem Witchcraft Trials because he knows that the afflicted girls are false. While he is trying to stop the trials he ends up being accused and is hanged because he would not “confess” to being a witch. Some people think John Proctor is a flawed person because he made a lot of poor decisions, but he is actually an honorable person because he tried to make up for his mistakes. In the play The Crucible, there are a few round characters, characters that have many or a few different sides or facets. These characters have different, conflicting traits, that confuse the reader on whether they should side with the character or not. The most dominate round character in the play is John Proctor, he progresses a lot as a character throughout the play, he changes from being someone you may not like, into a character that you very well may end up liking a lot because of his actions in the play. He has a past of being unfaithful to his wife with another character, who turns out to be one of the main antagonists in the play. But, at the same time John is the main protagonist of the play, he defends the wrongfully accused in Salem,

She’s the main focus of the play because each act ends with her and her causes everything to happen due to the fact that she’s the only character in the play who’s looking for her motivation back that she has lost over the years before she met Tyrone. Arthur Miller writes “The Crucible” to portray the Salem witch trials of 1692. The people of Salem have grievances in which they need a scapegoat.
Despite the several flaws found through John Proctor's role in Arthur Miller's, "The Crucible" my analysis of Proctor's character reasons him to be a good man in the end. Within the play, John Proctor analyzes his past actions, realizing that his affair with Abigail Williams, deeply wounds his connection with his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. It is explained within the story by the author, that John Proctor's strong personality stems from his guilt. The speaker states, "He is a sinner, a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time but against his own vision of decent conduct" (Miller, 255).
John Proctor is a good man despite anything others may say about him. He displays three very noble qualities throughout the witch trials which are bravery, honesty, and an overall goal to save lives even to the point where he sacrificed his. While many argue John is a bad man because he committed adultery they are entirely mistaken. Just because he had one bad sin gives no right to anybody to call him a bad person when clearly the good side of him is shown more than the bad. John Proctor is a good man who displays the characteristics of a hero and could be seen as one for giving his life for his friends.
When people think of the play, “The Crucible”, they usually picture the witch trials and women being hanged, but Arthur Miller depicts the witch trials in a completely new light. He shows through a story that the witch trials were much more than just people calling others witches. There was deceit, pain, greed, and more. Through the play, we follow the character, Abigail, observe her actions and their consequences. We witness the lives of people she impacts, what happens to them, and how many times she lies to get her way.
In seventeenth century Salem, Massachusetts, the Puritans enforced strong moral beliefs of purity and the prohibition of sin. In a magazine article published in The New Yorker just prior to the release of the movie version of The Crucible, Arthur Miller comments, “In any play, however trivial, there has to be a still point of a moral reference against which to gauge the action. In our lives, in the late nineteen-forties and early nineteen-fifties no such point existed anymore…. for anyone needs to feel right to declare someone else wrong. Gradually, all the old political and moral reality had melted like a Dali watch.
