LOTF Symbolism The book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, is about how a group of young schoolboys in the midst of a World War, end up on a deserted island after a plane crash. The changing nature of Piggy, who is a symbol of the voice of reason, evolves from being necessary to being killed and having the reason of the island go along with him. In the beginning of the novel, Piggy is described as plump "The fat boy lowered himself over the terrace and sat down carefully, using the edge as a seat"(10), nearsighted "He wiped his glasses and adjusted them on his button nose"(11), and asthmatic "I can't swim.
After Matt Null’s presentation, I was entertained by the creative writings of the famous novelist and short story writer Edward P. Jones. His presentation began with one of his associates introducing him as one of the greatest writers in contemporary America writing on the struggles African Americans faced in the nation’s history. In his presentation, Jones read to us two of his newest short stories The Devil Swims Across the Anacostia River and In The Blink of God’s Eye. Jones used outstanding imagery, but what I took note of most was the particular way he used dialog to describe his characters subliminally. Piggy and Peeta are both important characters in their respective stories, Piggy was Ralph’s sidekick, helping Ralph make decisions and giving smart ideas, and Peeta being Katniss’ sidekick who wins The Hunger Games with Katniss. Both Piggy and Peeta have their similarities, but they also have their differences. The first similarity that Piggy and Peeta share is that they both share a talent that is overlooked by others. Peeta is shown to have a talent of throwing things, which is overlooked by everyone, while Piggy has his intellect and good ideas, which no one realizes. The other similarity is how Piggy and Peeta both have a liking for their main character from the beginning, but Ralph or Katniss do not feel the same.
Showing the reader the island, instead of telling them about it, allows the audience to picture the scene at the same pace that Ralph is experiencing it. Thus, a certain amount of mystery and intrigue is added to the setting, especially to the “party of boys… dressed in strangely eccentric clothing” (19). Thin and wavering, the lines of heat rising from the ground are an instantly recognizable aspect of a sweltering day. Emphasis of the weather forces the reader to picture the island more clearly, and perhaps imagine themselves on it. Perhaps the author is even comparing the tropical island the boys crashed on, to the most notorious hot environment known- hell.

This rejection is shocking as Piggy has value knowledge and tools needed for survival, and still being rejected even then deeply strikes at the heart of the theme for Lord of the Flies. Right from the beginning, Piggy realized that “[they] got to do something,” (8) and he recognized the shell Ralph had picked up as a conch.

Every story has situations that are shocking to the reader, and this book was great at letting the reader know what’s going on before the character. Character development was very big in this book as each boy changed towards the end.
As Ernest Hemingway wrote: “Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know.” People tend to think of geniuses as being haunted by anxiety, frustration, or likely suffering from depression. Sir William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies deals with the struggle of an intellectual individual who is filled with useful knowledge to help his peers but end up as an outcast and eventually murdered from the hatred of those he wants to help. Piggy is a great example of how those who are most intelligent in the society are treated unfairly base on their appearance and personality. Piggy is an outcast for many reasons, his health is one.
Bullying is a harmful thing that nobody should be a victim or attacker of. In the book “Lord of the Flies” the main characters are Piggy, Jack, Simon, and Ralph. Piggy looks different than the other boys and has issues that affect his lifestyle. The articles “Bullying in Early Adolescence by Dorothy L. Espelage.” and “Online Identity by CommonLit Staff.” supports the idea that having the issues he has can cause bullying by other youth to make themselves feel better and for entertainment.
Cheering is when you learn and execute a few cheers as well as perhaps a quick dance, some fundamental leaps, stunting, or tumbling. In cheer, one group would work on dances and cheers while the other might focus on jumps, stunts, and tumbling. To put on a superb show, you will have to continue despite errors and incredibly uncomfortable situations. A cheerleader should possess the following qualities: self-assurance, leadership, an excellent memory, and courage/versatility. What abilities and foundational elements are needed to become a good cheerleader is the real question.
Piggy’s Logic In William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies, Piggy is the most rational boy on the island compared to the other children. As a logical person, he can control his emotions and he is able to analyze situations with a clear thought process. His way of thinking is based on logic as well, and he expresses his feelings accordingly to the issue at hand. However, the boys, unable to comprehend Piggy’s words, decide to ignore him.
