Superstar athlete, Vincent Edward “Bo” Jackson, embodied characteristics that are similar to those of epic heroes in literature. Jackson did what no other had done before him; he played two professional sports at the same time. It is worth noting that Jackson did not simply participate in the game, he was the entire show. His mind-boggling speed and sheer strength demonstrated a level of athleticism that the world had never seen before. Breaking the nine year long losing football streak against rival Alabama made him a hero to the school and the football program. The historic play of the game that broke the streak consisted of Jackson jumping over the players to make the touchdown. His success in the Auburn Football Program allowed him to receive the 55th Heisman Award and eventually go on to become the NFL’s first draft pick. Like many epic heroes, Jackson did not boast nor ever really acknowledged his greatness. He was chosen as the No. 1 NFL Draft Pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and turned them down because he believed that the team had been morally wrong in their efforts to convince him to play for them. It was evident throughout Jackson’s athletic career that he was not in it for the money or the fame, but simply enjoyed playing the game.
