People let fear get the best of them. All three authors that comes up in my easy want their audience to understand don't let fear lead to them to judge something unless they understand it. In Rikers hi novel by Paul Volponi , Allowables poem by Nikki Giovanni and the absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian novel by Sherman Alexie use characterization and conflict to prove people make assumptions to judge another person because they fear what they don’t understand. In Rikers High when Martin had gotten arrested he was wrongfully characterized as a criminal. In the story Martin gave information about the location of drugs in his neighborhood to an undercover cop. “I was at home sitting alone on the stoop outside my building then when I got …show more content…

In other words my thesis connects back to the central idea because it shows Martin was judged just for having common knowledge on the where drugs were in his own neighborhood. Volponi purpose for using characterization in this moment is because Volponi want to readers to see been young adolescent black boy in New York you are more likely to be racially profiled. Furthermore into the story Martin had arrived on Rikers Island and within a day he was sliced to his face by another inmate and now had time to contemplate on what happened using personal versus self conflict. “ I wanted to scream out loud fuck that kid for slice on my face fuck him for putting my mother through this shit fuck me forget my black ass lock up”(pg 50). Volponi writes “ being locked up was something we shared together and I kissed his letter and put it in my pocket so I wouldn’t lose it”(pg 166-167). Once again Volponi uses characterization to show people making assumptions to Judge another person because they fear what they don’t understand. While Volponi led me to prove my thesis because Martin listening and taking the advice from his own father who he hasn’t seen in a long time was also incarcerated shows he’s genuine and understanding. Young adolescent boy who understands to stay under the radar and take advice from the older people been through it shows that Martin shouldn’t have been judged and the way he he was. Without the author characterizing Martin this way, the reader would not understand why Martin does the things that he do and will be puzzled as to why Martin was judged over the course of the story. More further in the novel of Rikers High Sanchez took an attempt on his life and Martin intervened and was characterized as genuine. Sanchez flooded the house on the attempt to take his own life and Martin help save him but even though sensor still tried to end it he still going upstate Martin after tried to stay out of it. “ I stay in my own fees and was ready to smack myself in the mall for even thinking I have
