Concerning Characters Concern ranks in the top of characteristics for a true friend to have. People with this quality care more for others. The Bible says “That there should be no schism in the body: but that the members should have the same care one for another.”(1 Corinthians 12:25). Having an uneasiness for one another makes for a good and biblical trait. Distress helps people trust each other. Chaim Potok, the author of The Chosen did a fantastic job of displaying this attribute in his characters. Mr. Galanter, Danny, and Reuven have this imperative trait. Mr. Galanter, Reuven’s baseball coach, has this important characteristic. He demonstrates this characteristic when Reuven, the protagonist, gets hit in the eye with a baseball. “I saw Mr. Galanter put his face next to mine. It was sweaty and full of concern.”(p30) Mr. Galanter also brings Reuven to the hospital, and he visits Reuven while he heals in the hospital. Mr. Galanter also has concernment for all the other members on his team. He reminds his players to play their hardest and not to give up.
