Do you ever wonder what would happen if there was no light? How would people act in a situation like this? In the book Light by Michael Grant, and in Legend by Marie Lu, the titles describe these books very well in some ways. In Light, Sam is finally figuring out a way to become free. However, Gaia, the daughter of the Gaiaphage, is out to destroy everyone in the FAYZ. It is all finally coming to an end. The title describes this book well because, Light is describing the light at the end of the tunnel. Also, Sam’s power is being able to shoot light out of his hands. It does not describe the book well because there is much more happening than just light coming back again. Sam knows that he has to chase down Gaia to keep her from causing mass destruction. Gaia is the most dangerous being in the FAYZ, so Sam has Caine come with him to help assist. “Go out there and she’ll pick you off easy, Caine said. Take anyone with you and you’re just getting them killed, too” (Grant 256). In Caine’s opinion, Gaia is unstoppable but Sam thinks there might be a way, and Caine is a major asset. This title fits the book because, Sam knows that he must fight for light, or die trying. Also, the title fits the book because it shows that there is always hope, or light in this situation. In the FAYZ, there is a small opening where the children can see their parents and communicate with them. The only problem is they cannot speak to one another. Everyone is rooting for Sam to stop Gaia so that they can all see their parents again. Sam thinks that if he and Caine can combine powers, it might be possible to defeat Gaia. First off, light is what everyone is desperately looking for, not what they live in. In the book, everyone lives in darkness and the only way to escape the darkness is to kill Gaia. Gaia has no compassion for anyone, and will kill everyone in the FAYZ when she has reached maximum power. “I worry about nothing, Gaia said, but there was impatience in the toss of her head, worry in her eyes” (Grant 303). Gaia is worried that Sam might figure out the truth, that she can be stopped. The only way to stop Gaia and illuminate the darkness is Little Pete, Astrid’s autistic brother whom she killed. Little Pete has the power of a god, and could kill Gaia if he knew how to handle himself. He is very antisocial and seems very innocuous, but he is capable of wiping out an entire world. The title does not help describe if light is what is needed in the book, you just have to be able to assume that. In the end, Michael Grant could have done a better job with the
