In the novel Charles and Emma, it introduces Charles Darwin back in London in 1838, two years after his long voyage around the world. He is debating whether to settle down and get married or keep with his travels and not marry. Some cons of settling down and finding a wife were, no freedom to go where he liked, forced to visit relatives, and a large loss of time. However the main downfall of marriage, in Charles mind, is his religious beliefs. Charles also thought of the advantages of marriage. He thought that a wife would give him a constant companion and a friend in old age as well as, someone to take care of a house. He imagined himself as a father to children and thought of it as an advantage to marriage. Charles was born on February 12, 1809, in Shrewsbury, a small town northwest of London. His parents Robert and Susanna Darwin had two boys Erasmus and Charles, and four girls Susan, Emily, Marianne, and Catherine. His father was a successful doctor and also a well-respected businessman. He gave his children much freedom and leeway in their beliefs about religion. Charles first asked his dad if he could support a family and his father explained he would have no problem even without an income because of his father’s work. Then he asked his father about the problem of God. After his voyage, in 1838, he began to have serious doubts about religion. Charles began to not believe that God created the world and doubted that Christianity was the religion. He was not dismissing God altogether, but his doubts were very strong. His father encouraged him to marry and to not tell the women he would marry about his religious doubts. Not only did his father tell him to conceal his doubts but to also hurry
