In the article written by Charles Blow about his son, Blow expresses his thoughts and feelings on a situation where his son was going back to his dorm room from the Yale university library and a police officer pulled a gun on him. One evening Blow’s son had gone to the library to check the status of a book he had order. As he was leaving he noticed a police officer following him, he admits that he did not pay the officer any mind until he heard the officer say “I got him”. The officer then told Blow’s son to turn around, which he did, but as he turned around the officer had his gun pointed to him and told him to get on the ground. Blow’s son followed the officer’s instructions. The officer began to question him, and then eventually let him go. Just as he was going back to his room, the officer stopped him again and began to question him again and this time the officer was relaying the information to another officer. It wasn’t until a female officer had come to the site, for Blow’s son to get clarity on what the situation was about. She explained to him that there have been recent burglaries and he matched the description of the suspect. Charles Blow explains how angry and upset he was that his son had to experience this. If Blow had not talked to his son about what to do in situations like this one, his son could have been shot by the officer. I wonder the same thing Blow wonders. What if his son had made a “suspicious” move? The officer would have shot him and again we would have another black man killed by a police officer. I don’t understand why the officer felt the first thing he had to do was pull out his gun, when he could have asked for his name before detaining him. If Blow’s son had not cooperated with the officer, this article could have had terrible
