The word evolution in biology means descent with modification and can be theoretically described as: "a gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form. “These changes or modifications take place at the genetic level of a species this in turn can affect the way a species interacts with its surrounding environment. Over a period of time these genetic alterations can affect the entire population, and in turn given the right conditions may result in the emergence of a new species. Both evolutionary theories from Charles Darwin and Jean Baptiste Lamarck will be analysed, to determine which theory is more applicable to the evolutionary advancement of Polar Bears from Brown Bears. The scientific theory to be evaluated, is the ancestors of the polar bears experienced multiple evolutionary changes in order to adapt and survive in the harsh conditions of the Arctic. Jean Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829)- …show more content…
His evolutionary theory states that changes were progressively introduced to species, and then handed down to further generations. He believed that this was due to environmental changes, in order to ensure their survival it was imperative that they altered their behaviour. An example of Lamarck’s evolutionary theory was Giraffes. The use and disuse notion was believed to occur along the neck of the giraffe. Lamarck firmly believed in his theory, that a giraffe had the capability to develop a lengthened neck, as they continually strained their neck when attempting to reach high branches. However, his inability to prove how this would occur, was the major downfall in regards to this
