Charles Darwin The year is 1831, Charles Robert Darwin has just received the letter that will change is life, an invitation to join the HMS Beagle. The ship would be roving around the world for most of the next five years, and Darwin was to be working as the ship's naturalist. Since Darwin was a child he loved nature and exploring. The invitation was an opportunity for him to do something that he loved to do. So of course, he accepted. The ship, being commanded by Captain Robert FitzRoy, launched its voyage around the world on December 27, 1831. Over the long course of the trip, Darwin was able to collect many samples some including the oddest organisms and the most interesting fossils. He had a very unique chance to make experiments that very few will get a chance to make, and he took full advantage of it. He seemed to be very engaged in learning specifically about the Pacific islands and South America. Darwin was twenty-two at the time the voyage first set out. Along the voyage he was allowed to go off on his own and explore to his own accord, as a result, he had only spent about eighteen months on board. Respectively so, as he was surrounded by viruses and diseases, however, he did enjoy being on the ship. When the Beagle landed on the Galapagos Islands, Darwin and almost all people aboard the ships took samples of exotic birds along the islands. He also mentioned finches, with only one in his diary.
