The Victorian Period had a major influence in today’s literature. The Victorian era was the time period when Queen Victoria’s reign began on June 20, 1837 until the day of her death on January 22, 1901. During Victoria’s reign, it was a long period of peace in Britain. There was a huge growth in the population, significant improvements in technology, and changes in how people saw the world. These changes were scientific beliefs, which changed how people saw themselves and everything around them, for instance, causing people to distance themselves from the church. Finally, the most common influence, the triumph of right over wrong. Furthermore, one novel that was influenced from the Victorian Period is “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens. Dickens’ writing style for “Great Expectation” was that he used many hyperboles and irony while writing the novel. The influence Charles Dickenson used from the Victorian Period was the drive for social advancement, in this case, how Pip wanted to become a gentleman to marry Estella, as will be explained further in the paragraph. Brontë’s writing style is elaborate, complex and romantic. The influence the Victorian Period had on this novel, “Jane Eyre”, is the drive for social advancement. Jane Eyre was simply a poor orphan, who fell in love with a rich man, therefore, they get married. One can say that Jane married above her social and economic ranking. Also, in this novel you can see the social role of Victorian women, in this case the social class. This was by far my favorite novel that I choose for this essay, I just fell in love with the story. The novel is about a young orphaned girl named Jane Eyre, who lives with her aunt and cousins, The Reeds. Jane is constantly tormented by The Reeds, including the servants. Due to this, Jane stands up for herself, and still ends up being punished, so they send Jane to a boarding school for orphans where she becomes an excellent student. At the age of eighteen, Jane leaves the school to become a governess; as a result, she finds a job tutoring a little French girl. The girl’s guardian is a man called, Mr. Rochester. Jane and Rochester eventually fall in love. For this reason, Mr. Rochester proposes to Jane, in which she happily accepts. On the day of the wedding, two men claim that Mr. Rochester is already married to a woman named, Bertha, who he was tricked into marrying by his father.
