Charles Dickens had a difficult life while growing up. He didn’t have many years of education, but while he was in school, he was a model student. After his brief time at school, he had to go back to working at the bootblack factory where he pasted labels on jars over and over and over and over. He disliked the work a great deal, and he remembered the hatred all through his life. Dickens laced clues and references to the boot blacking factory in his novels. He and his family dealt with poverty when he was younger, which explains why poverty was such a big theme in all of his books, and why he cared so much about giving the poor a voice and helping end the indifference of the rich toward the poor’s situation.
