Charles Manson was born on November 12, 1934, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Kathleen Maddox. A 16-year-old who was both an alcoholic and prostitute. Manson was forced to live on the streets, and spent nearly half his young adult life in prison. While he was in jail, he used his creative talents as an outlet and learned how to read music and play the guitar. After Manson’s release he pursued a career in the music industry and was soon collaborating with a producer by the name of Terry Melcher. Much to Manson’s dismay, Melcher later rejected his work and refused to sign a record deal with Manson. By the late 1960s the Haight Ashbury movement was in full swing and Manson gathered a group of flower children who shared a passion for the 60s counterculture lifestyle. Initially, Spahn Ranch where the Manson family resided was founded based on socialist ideals. Everyone was equal while peace and love were their primary focus. These ideologies soon changed as Manson become more powerful and gained a larger following. It wasn’t long before The Family began to habitually use psychedelic drugs such as LSD. Although Terry Melcher no longer lived at the same address, this detail was insignificant to Manson. He saw Melcher’s house as The Establishment and he desired to destroy it. Manson saw Melcher’s home as symbol for his failures in life regardless of the current residents living there.
