The Manson family originated in California, USA in the 1960s. They were a quasi-commune led by none other than Charles Manson, and gained national recognition after they murdered actress Sharon Tate.

Childhood
Charles Milles Manson was born November 12, 1934 to Kathleen Maddox in Cincinnati, Ohio. At the time of Charles’s birth, Kathleen was unmarried and only 16 years old. One thing that Charles has offered over the years is that his mother once sold him for a pitcher of beer to a waitress who had no children of her own, from whom his uncle had retrieved him days later (Emmons, 1988).
Kathleen and her brother were arrested in 1939 and sentenced to five years in prison for robbing a store in Charleston, West Virginia. During this time, Charles was under the care of his aunt and uncle. Kathleen was released on parole in 1942 and retrieved Charles, which he later said was his only happy childhood memory (Emmons, 1988). In October 1951, Manson was transferred to a minimum-security institute where he was deemed dangerous before being transferred to a higher security institution. After his transfer he showed magnificent improvement, becoming the model inmate and furthering his education. This good behavior earned him parole in 1954.
After his release, he married a waitress named Rosalie. Manson claimed that he found temporary but genuine marital happiness with Rosalie. Manson later stole a car in which him and Rosalie drove to Los Angeles, only to be caught and given five years of probation. When he failed to appear in court for another car theft charge in Florida, Manson was arrested in Indianapolis and sentenced to three years at Terminal Island in California.
When Rosalie stopped visiting, Manson was informed that after the birth of Charles Manson Jr. she was living with another man. Manson attempted to escape from Terminal Island by stealing a car and was caught, resulting in his upcoming parole being denied. (Bugliosi & Gentry ,
