Charlie started off having the mental state of a four-year-old brain when he was 32. Charlie worked at a bakery. He was the cleanup guy. He thought everyone was his friend. He was kind to people. Charlie meets Dr. Strauss and professor Nemur. Dr. Strauss tests him on many things and professor Nemur looks at the results. Charlie doesn’t understand why most things happen. Charlie goes to a university that Dr. Strauss and Professor Nemur work at. He there races against a mouse named Algernon. Algernon wins the races. Charlie goes along with the flow of things. When they get the consent for the operation charlie thinks that changes are going to happen right after. He figures out that he doesn’t really have friends. At the bakery, he has been getting new jobs because he learned how to do them well. Mr. Donner his boss at the bakery gives him a raise and everyone else working at the bakery gets mad. He then loses his jobs and hangs around the university. He races Algernon and wins some of the maze races that they would do. Algernon had the surgery first. Algernon has been able to keep the smartness the longest without any complications. As Charlie gets smart he starts to remember things from his youth. He learns that he was bullied at school when he was younger and at the bakery by whom he called friends. He starts to feel things as his brain catches up with his body. He learns that he has feelings for Miss Kinnian. Miss Kinnian tells him they should wait. Charlie since he was Dr. Strauss and professor Nemur´s experiment then he went to a conference with them. There at the conference people were in awe and they looked at Charlie and Algernon. Charlie found out that he is smarter and can speak more languages than Dr. Strauss and Professor Nemur. He made them look bad and like they were a lie to society.
