Charlie Brown is an example of how anybody can live their life the way they want, no matter the way they were born. For the first half of his life, Charlie was a slave. After he was finally freed he met the love of his life at the plantation where she worked. He created a business in our own Brazoria County and bought the plantation where his wife, Isabella, worked as a slave. This was a time when African Americans were targeted for hate crimes and violence. Even though this discrimination, Charlie went on to be the largest taxpayer in Brazoria County. He even owned 2/3 of the land in West Columbia. Charlie Brown's accomplishments went unnoticed for a century. Charlie Brown became a freed slave after June 19, 1865. He would use the trees for lumber and ship it down to furniture manufacturers. He later bought 3,000 acres and became the largest landowners in Brazoria County. He owned a sawmill, a sugar mill, and a grist mill. Mr. Brown donated to many things, including 2 churches, and 2 schools, one named after himself. Charlie was a busy man, having been seen riding around in a horse and buggy. He gave people jobs regardless of their race, having black, Hispanic, and white employees.
