Charlie Gordon is the only person to talk not only in the first but also in the third person. Charlie actually talks in third person is in his flashbacks. One of the reasons that he talks in third person in his flashbacks is because he does not recognize himself to the fact that he becomes smarter; so he calls himself a different Charlie. By having an operation done to him, Charlie continiously becomes smarter. In the middle of the book his IQ increases and reaches 185; by the end of the book however, he goes back to an IQ of 68. His IQ goes down because he wants his old life back and his old friends, no matter what they did to him in the past. Another quote, which demonstrates and reinforces the second argument is the following, “I figured out a new way to set up the mixing machines in the bakery to speed up production.” (p.59). In this quote, Charlie Gordon says that he found a new way to set up the mixing machines in the bakery to speed up production. This happens in the middle of the book when Charlie has an IQ of 185. “When Gimpy has finished working his dough into a ball, he stands back, and so does Charlie.” (p.63). Charlie says this quotation, as he talks about a man named Gimpy who teaches Charlie how to make dough balls. Gimpy is one of Charlie 's co-workers; he has always been nice to Charlie.
