In the short story Flowers for Algernon by Daniel keyes, we learn how Charlie took a risk at trying to become smart. He loses friends and regains them after being made fun of by a new guy and his friends stand up for him. When he became close to algernon he noticed he wasn’t himself and Carlie thought this would happen to him. I don’t think charlie should have taken the operation for this reason and many more. When Charlie said he wanted to go through with this operation he was warned that it might not be permanent. Carlie soon realized that after Algernon started going crazy from when he met him, he was thinking that this would happen to him. He started losing it in front of all his friends like Mrs. Kinnian when he said he didn't want to see her. Everyone he used to know he doesn't want them near him because he is afraid of getting made fun of for being dumb than smart then dumb again. When he did see everyone, he would be annoyed, because he also felt unaccepted and would feel like even more of an outcast. Everyone was nice and wanted the old charlie back and he thought they felt bad for him. We see how not having it permanent might have helped him on his social stage but killed the old charlie in the process. After Algernon died, Carlie went into a deep form of depression and didn’t want to be bothered. Mrs. Kinnian wanted to talk to charlie but he didn't want to talk to anybody, couldn’t work, and would just lie there all day. Carlie also was realizing how he had no friends only people making fun of him and he would go crazy from that because he hated being made fun of so he would chase them away. Just like when Mrs. Flynn called the doctor who cracked a joke and was run out of charlie's apartment, all because Carlie thought he was making fun of
