Women in Mathematics Throughout history women have played major roles in the development of mathematics. Over the course of several centuries, women have made a major impact on the world of mathematics and ability for young girls to be able to study mathematics. Many were pioneers of education, processes, and helped pave the way for women to gain notoriety for their accomplishments. Charlotte Angas Scott and Sofia Kovalevskaya are just two of the many women who had an impact on the world of mathematics. Though it was very unorthodox for a young girl to receive anything but a basic education, Scott’s family wanted her to have a formal education and encouraged her to pursue an academic career (“Charlotte Angas Scott Facts”,30 September 2017). She received a scholarship to attend Hitchin College. She was one of ten women in her class who were not allowed to be in the same room as the male students (“Charlotte Angas Scott Facts”,30 September 2017). Scott received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from the University of London in 1882. (“Charlotte Angas Scott Facts”,30 September 2017). In 1885, Scott left England to move the United States to pursue a career in education. She was one of the founding educators of Bryn Mawr College that opened in 1885. It was the first University to offer graduate degrees to women (“Charlotte Angas Scott Facts”,30 September 2017). Scott’s major contribution to the world of mathematics was the development of her curriculum that has been used for decades.
